17thc Oil Portrait Of A Dutch Nobleman C1635 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A Sublime Museum Quality Early 17th Century Dutch Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting
-
Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck (Haarlem - 1600 - 1662)
-
A remarkable and rare example of early 17th century Dutch 'Golden Age' Baroque portraiture...... painted circa 1635 by an artist of prodigious talent and deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as 'museum standard'.
-
In a period when black clothing was the fashion (a dense black being very expensive to obtain) artists strove to depict the different nuances and textures of the fabrics as convincingly as possible.
They found that black is an ideal background with which to contrast the crisp white linen and rich lace and this dramatically accentuates the face and hand gestures. This extreme opposition between black and white is both austere and exciting, and is a characteristic feature of portraiture of this period.
-
Make no mistake this work is of a calibre which merits inclusion in many of the galleries and museums dedicated to fine portrait painting from the 17th century - and particularly originating in the Low Countries - today's Holland.......... one of the finest portraits I have found in a very good while.
-
My instincts point me towards the studio of Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck who was resident in Haarlem until 1660 having been born in that same town in about 1600. Quite clearly the work has been completed by an artist of stature and commissioned by a sitter of status and wealth.
-
Another contemporary painter of Verspronck was of course Daniel Mijtens (Delft - The Hague - 1596 - 1647) whose portraits our chap also closely resembles.
I feel Verspronck is my choice - the work matches his studio more closely although it must be said that there were numerous artists vying for similar commissions at this time.....
-
CONDITION REPORT
In first class relined order for the age with perfectly stable paint surface... evidence of an historic repair which has been expertly carried out and housed in a later but perfectly synergic ebonised and gilt slip frame.
Any slightly 'lighter' areas on the canvas are camera varnish glare and are not present in the actual painting.
A good medium manageable size and ready to hang.
-
An exquisite 'Manor House' item of historic and particular note - I cannot recommend this striking portrait more enthusiastically......I hope the photographs speak for themselves......
