17th Century Pine Panel Picture / Mirror Frame
A fine English carved pine oval frame circa 1685
Often named a "Lely frame" after the artist Sir Peter Lely, and also simply a panel frame, these were picture frames for the portraits of the time. Always gilded, often in silver, they continued to be made through to the 20th century and many later frames are passed off as 17th century originals.
It is through the construction method and evidence of the age of the wood that one can be sure of authenticity and here we have the unusual example of a frame stripped down to the wood.
Many stripped items are wax finished, but this item is NOT WAXED.
It has been coated with animal glue as the first preparation for applying gesso before gilding.
It can be gilded if you wish.
The frame is constructed in layers, and the base/rear layer is oak. This makes for a very sturdy foundation upon which to lay the pine.
There are a couple of minor losses and some historical repairs as you might expect for a 330 year old piece. If this item is not entirely suitable, please do not hesitate to contact us as we have a large store of un-restored items which can be started on if necessary.
All our mirror frames are fully restored using gold leaf and traditional materials.
We have over 30 years experience of gilding and restoration and we are very happy to undertake restoration work of any item, antique picture frame or antique mirror frame of yours that may need repair, re-gilding or indeed, simply cleaning.
If you need advice on the hanging and fixing of mirrors please contact us, we will be happy to help.
If you would like to view any item, please contact us and we can make an appointment.
