17th Century Oak Wainscot Chair
A very good and original wainscot chair c. 1650 with all original timbers including seat boards.
Pegged throughout, some depletions to feet and to edge of one seat board. Great colour and patination, very sturdy and heavy and with a well carved foliate top rail over a panel back carved with stylised tulips. Chip carved boarded seat and set on bobbin turned legs joined by original stretchers.
Great Chairs were used by the master of a house and were often placed on a dias to give them greater visibility and importance. Always the focal point of the room, the carving and extended ears of the top rails was intended to draw the eye and give more stature to the seated master – showing his wealth and importance. Guests, regardless of wealth or status, would be seated on stools.
Well made and highly prized, these chairs were expensive possessions and each reflects the person for whom it was made. Most households would have had a great chair and they vary in form and quality, some carved with names, some are inlaid. but rarely are they as original as this chair and it has excellent provenance from a Scottish castle.
Dimensions are:
22 inches wide, 26 inches deep and 43 inches high.
Floor to seat is 16 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
