Front recently painted.
The back is original and quite rusty.
Approximate dimensions: 36.6cm x 26.3cm, weight 4kg.
Attractive late 19th century sign.
This was a company promoting a line between Wakefield and Doncaster. There was also a branch line connecting Adwick Le Street to Stainforth giving access to Grimsby. The company was sponsored by Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway as well as GNR who became joint owners.
The line opened in 1866 and was beneficial for both the GNR because it shortened the route for express trains from Doncaster to Leeds by 20 minutes and also gave MS&LR direct access to the manufactures of West Yorkshire and the docks at Grimsby.
At the grouping in 1923 it became part of the LNER. Today it is part of the London to Leeds route.
Rare to find a bridge plate from this small company and with the number 1.
