Victorian Silver Hand Mirror, Charles Fox, 1897
Here we have a very high quality Victorian Sterling Silver Hand Mirror with all over scrolling foliate decoration. There is a large heart shaped blank cartouche in the centre of the back of the mirror. As there are no initials this would be perfect as a special gift.
The mirror is made in London by Charles Fox & Co Ltd and dates to 1897. Charles James Fox founded his company in the 1880s in the Clerkenwell district of London, which was the centre of much of London's silver manufacturing. They produced high end silver items for discerning customers and remained in business into the 1920s.
Condition is very good indeed with no dings or dents in the silver. The mirror glass is nice and clear and gives a true reflection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hand mirror is 24.9cm from top to bottom and 10.7cm at its widest point. It weighs in at 314.8g but this obviously includes the mirror glass. Nevertheless there is a substantial amount of silver in the item.
The hallmarks to one side of the cartouche are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the C.J.F makers' mark for Charles James Fox of Charles Fox & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the mirror.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
