A large gilt wood oval wall mirror from a design by Thomas Johnson, plate 55 in his One Hundred and Fifty New Designs of 1761.Also to be found in Geoffrey Wills' English Looking Glasses, page 99 a smaller but very similar frame. The oval plate framed in an egg and dart moulding and shell work overlaid with foliage and scrolling, and with an exotic bird at each side, the cresting with central flowers beneath leaves and flanked by fountains. Lower scrolling also featuring cascading water.
62" x 37".
Bevelled glass and original backing.
My understanding is that it most likely is a frame carved in the early nineteenth century in the manner of one possibly pre-existent or from an original drawing. If this item is not entirely suitable, please do not hesitate to contact us as we have a large store of un-restored items which can be started on if necessary.
All our mirror frames are fully restored using gold leaf and traditional materials.
