Sixth Century Roman Coin Brooch in 18ct Gold 20th Century Gold %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A piece of history in a great piece of vintage Italian antique jewellery.

This lovely, sunburst-design, mid-Century, Italian brooch radiates 20 baroque pearls around a beaded 18ct gold setting, containing a coin mount with rub-over set sapphires to the edge. The coin itself is a genuine Justinian I (527-565) gold solidus from Constantinople which is 22ct gold. To the back is a double pin and rollover clasp. It also carries an Italian hallmark "750" and a makers designation consisting of a monogram symbol followed by the legend - "Al21". I am not an expert on Italian marks, but my investigations suggest this would be for the jeweler Pietro Raiteri of Alessandria and that he ceased trading before 1949. If anybody recognises this mark and has better information, I'm always interested to learn.

Neither am I an expert on coins, but I am given the following description by someone who is: "Justinian I (527-565) gold solidus, Constantinople mint, obv. bust facing, globus in right hand, ANVSPPAV, rev. Angel holding globus crucigus in left hand and staff in right, Victoria AVGG S, CONOS in exergue". I'm not selling this as a coin and don't know about classifications of condition, but although there is some slight loss of definition, it looks pretty good to me for a 1500 year old coin.

53mm diameter - weight 21g.

Excellent condition consistent with age and use. There is nothing material that detracts from aesthetics or function. The observations below are intended for completeness and transparency. See photos and description. Minor surface wear and marking to the gold consistent with age and normal use.

I trade in small silver, jewellery and objets d'art. I sell primarily at antiques fairs and in cabinets in Christique Antique Centre in Dorking. I try to find unusual and interesting stock and like to keep turning it over, so I can buy more. Postage and packing are free within the UK - unless explicitly stated otherwise. All fine jewellery will be supplied with a box. If the box/case is described in the text, it will be the one photographed, but may not be if it is not mentioned explicitly. I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week. If you don't see what you're looking for - feel free to send an enquiry via the site. I have only been able to list a portion of my stock.

I will always mention anything that materially affects the aesthetic or function of a piece, but will not attempt to describe what I consider to be normal for age and use. Please use the photographs as well as you can and I’m always happy to answer specific questions.
