A rare and most unusual chatelaine receptacle - ARCHERY

This item has been made to hang on a chatelaine. The outside has been decorated with a “crocodile” effect. The item has been designed along the lines of a “quiver”?

On the outside has been engraved “BACKWELL ARCHERS”. Backwell is just outside Bristol and the archery was very popular in the south west with an annual archery competition taking place at Dunster Castle each year.

Birmingham 1909 both the main body and the top are both marked. Makers mark Lawrence Emanuel whose mark is found on chatelaines.

The inside is gilded and I believe that there was grease inside, which has been cleaned out, (not by me), Oil and grease appear to be used in archery.
