Scandinavian Bentwood Painted Storage / Bridal Box
Folk art, tulip decorated, Scandinavian almost certainly Swedish, ‘Svepask’ (decorated bentwood storage box)
This tulip design was typical of those boxes made in the early 19th century.
These boxes were often used for food storage however were also known as ‘brides boxes’.
Beautifully crafted clearly of significant age, estimated as 1820 – 1840’s.
This is confirmed by the use of the hand planed timbers, overlap construction & original split birch root stitching all secured with handmade nails.
The condition is excellent taking into account the age of this item.
It has some minor wear, losses & repair.
There is some light sign of historic infestation to an area of the base which has been fully treated as a precaution.
Totally sound. A beautiful display piece, it’s colours clear & bright.
