Rural Idealised Landscape With Figures
A beautiful late 18th-century landscape depicting an idealised scene from rural Britain. Two mature trees provide a frame that guides the eye along a bending river and towards a stone bridge.
In the foreground, a gentleman wearing a hat, coat, waistcoat and breeches, stands close to a seated lady dressed in blue. She looks upwards towards him as they hold a conversation. While on the river, three men are setting off on a small boat, perhaps to fish or for a trip upstream.
With its illuminated distant hills, mature trees, dark foreground, and historic buildings, the painting is reminiscent of 17th-century continental landscapes, particularly the works of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. The artist, although probably an amateur, was clearly influenced by this style, like many other British painters during the late 18th/early 19th-century.
It’s housed within a fairly contemporary swept frame and the reverse bears some interesting partial labels.
Medium: Oil on pine panel
Size including frame: 26” x 21” / 67cm x 54cm x 5cm
Year of creation: c. 1780 - c. 1820
Condition: Board extended (historically) by adding an extra piece on to the bottom. Frame in good order. The reverse has been left untidy to display the various layers of history. Our inspections include a check for any signs of woodworm, historic or otherwise, as this is not unusual in antique frames or stretchers. If we discover any small holes, we treat the wood with a solution which states that "its deep penetration ensures effective protection for many years and prevents re-infestation". With this in mind, it's very unlikely that any future issues will occur, especially given that the wood may also have been treated by previous owners. However, as mentioned above, we are unable to provide any warranties or guarantees - just be assured that we care.
Also, many of the paintings include hanging equipment, namely wire or string. Sometimes this is already present when we purchase an item so we check to see if it's been attached correctly. However, we can't test the durability of this equipment as many of the paintings are sold quickly. So please do seek any advice if you're unsure how to hang your paintings correctly, especially if they're heavy, and do check on them from time to time.
