Rare 39 Pipe Flute Clock called Der Entenfall
An important 39 Pipe Flute Clock called Der Entenfall by Ignaz Schoepperle c1840, Ingaz Schoepperle was a famous German organ and music box maker and became renowned for producing some of the finest musical mechanisms to the highest of standards, this reputation later enabled him to form the famous Lenzkirch Company with Eduard Hauser in 1848. Lenzkirch being by far the finest German clockmakers of the time.
Ignaz Schoepperle made this antique clock around c1840 and it demonstrates the very best of his skills as an instrument maker, the 39 pipe flute organ being weight driven and actuated on the hour by the beautifully made “A” frame striking movement. The organ tune originates from an eight-air large pin wheel barrel that can be removed and interchanged with two other barrels, each barrel is made of wood and has numerous metal pins and strips that actuate each flute valve independently. The speed of the tune is governed by a large counterweighted “fly” that can be finely tuned via counterweights that screw in or out. Each tune can be selected via a selector dial to the side and a repeat tune/sequential knob can be actuated in between plays.
“Der Entenfall” or The Duck Hunt is a named clock and has resided in a German museum for quite some time, the large square dial having a hand painted scene of a duck hunt in progress along with a dial in the lower portion. The dial can be removed so the movement can be seen operating. Please see my Instagram page for a full video of its operation.
The beautiful flame mahogany case is substantial but well proportioned, standing at 90” tall and 32” wide.. there are some age related cracks and shrinkage to the base panel, however I have refrained from restoring these cracks to retain as much of this important original clock as possible. I can restore these cracks if requested.
I have fully overhauled the movement and organ personally, each flute has been dismantled, cleaned and tuned. All valves, bellows and pushrods have been re-leathered and sealed, this has enabled the tune to be crisp and clear. The “A” frame movement has been fully overhauled and works perfectly striking a coiled gong.
I will personally deliver, set up and calibrate this clock as required.
I know I say this, however this is a very unique and rare opportunity to be a custodian of an important German black forest flute clock made by one of Germany’s finest 19th century makers.
