Pierre Langlade 1812-1909 French Oil Flower Piece

We are pleased to offer this interesting oil on artist's board by the French artist Pierre Langlade, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a display of tropical flowers in a landscape and has been executed in a fine, stipple technique.
Pierre Langlade was born in Aubusson, France on 28th May 1812. This town is noted for its manufacture of carpets. He trained in Paris in 1830 and returned to Aubusson, where he specialised in design and flower painting. In 1843 he moved to Paris, where he married and set up a publishing and printing business. In the 1860s he returned to Aubusson, where the company he had previously worked for had become an Anglo/French firm. For various reasons he accepted an offer from Henry Widnall & Company, who had a Carpet Factory in Bonnyrigg near Edinburgh in 1864 and worked for them for thirty years as a designer.
For the last 15 years of his life in retirement, he painted mainly flower studies in oil and watercolour and gouache. He died on 2nd November 1909 only months after completing his last watercolour at the age of 97 and is buried at the Cockpen Church, Bonnyrigg, with his friend and housekeeper Louise Lacaud.
A more detailed biography is available at the following site bonnyrigglasswadelocalhistory.org/pierre-langlade-1812-1909/
He exhibited frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy and other Scottish exhibitions. Auction results for his painting may be found at artprice.com (7), artnet.com (6), arcadja.com and findartinfo.com (2 each). The painting is newly framed in a very nice 1 7/8" traditional style gilt frame that suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
