H. Williams 19th C. Welsh Oil On The Conway

We are offering for sale this large oil on canvas by the artist H. WILLIAMS, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and inscribed it verso 'On the Conway'. The painting depicts a view of a the River Conway or Afon Conwy, with a mountainous backdrop. The river is meandering its way through grassy and wooded slopes. It is a blustery day, with a storm cloud looming from the right and a small patch of blue sky, through which the sun is shinging and being reflected on the waters below.
We have consulted our reference books and, although we always try to give biographical information on the artists that we show, sometimes this is impossible, and that is the case here. Either the artist did not exhibit, in which case he would not appear in our books, or, he is one of the eight artists listed with the initial H and the surname Williams. We have also looked on the internet auction sites and they seem similarly confused, as, although there are some paintings shown by this artist, works that are obviously not by him are listed with his. Findartinfo.com lists 20 paintings by this artist under the name H. Williams, although there is one painting which is obviously by another H. Williams, an Australian artist. Artnet.com lists 7 paintings by this artist and shows examples of three, although the middle one is obviously a watercolour by an earlier artist. Therefore, the painting must stand on its merits and the buyer must do their own research.
One thing that we do know is that by checking the archive at Christie's, they have auctioned two or more paintings by this artist, one of the results shown above. A 36" x 24" painting, Lot 414, achieved a price of £1,058 on the 6th March, 2003, and another of Glen Orchy achieved £1,000 in 2011.
The painting is newly framed in a 3" swept, ornate gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 29 1/2" x 19 1/2" - 74.9cm x 49.5cm
Frame size: 35 5/8" x 25 5/8" - 90.5cm x 65cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good condition. There is one small repair to the canvas, which is clean and taut. There is a little craquelure and slight stretcher marks consistent with age. The frame is new.
