Pair of Orientalist paintings. 19th century.
1 of 5
Description: Orientalism is a pictorial movement, born in France at the end of the eighteenth century and then developed in the nineteenth century especially in France and England, which tended to represent settings and atmospheres typical of the oriental world.
The movement was born in the broader context of trends coming from exoticism, which influenced the cultural and artistic world of Europe, especially between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.
The current began above all in France, following Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798, and then developed with growing interest also in England and other European countries, also following the spread of European colonialism in North Africa and the Middle East .
Orientalist painters, who often had never visited the East, tended to portray figures, environments, scenes of life from the Arab or Middle Eastern world, always full of charm, exotic mystery and frequently also a certain sensuality, due to the tendency romantic to see in the exotic world an environment free from Western bourgeois conventions.
