Newlyn fish market oil painting by Marjorie Mort oil painting Cornwall Newlyn %%alt5%%
A great oil on board depicting the fish market at Newlyn, Cornwall by Marjorie Mort (1906-1988). A fine mid-century artwork, painted quickly and confidently with a simplicity that requires great skill. The work has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. It is signed to the lower right and has been framed in a simple oak frame with silvered slip.
Marjorie Mort (1906-1988) was born in Parson's Green. Between 1924-31 Mort studied at the Manchester School of Art before furthering her studies at the Slade School of Art in 1934 and finally at the Westminster School of Art where she studied under Walter Bayes. Mort moved to Cornwall in 1938 where she met Eric Hiller and Charles breaker, both local artists and with them established the Newlyn Holiday Sketching Group in 1949. A retrospective exhibition of her work, Fifty Years of Painting, was held at Newlyn Art Gallery in 1985. She also exhibited with the Newlyn Society of Artists and at the Falmouth Art Gallery.
The whole has a great sense of time and place, it is titled and dated 1950 and is likely to have been an exhibited piece.
