Large Medieval Scene Pokerwork of Saint Elizabeth.
Large pokerwork picture of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1207 – 1231). Very nearly four feet wide, drawn with a hot metal point onto wood and highly coloured. Elizabeth and her husband King Ludwig, with castle walls and mountains in the background viewed through Gothic arches. Huntsmen with hounds and bugles to the right of the scene whilst to the left is a group poor peasants. It is for her charity toward the poor and the founding of a hospital for their care that Elizabeth is best known. The image is an illustration of the miracle of the roses, the most famous episode of Elizabeth’s life. According to legend whilst Elizabeth was taking bread to the poor in secret, she met the King and a hunting party. To quell an accustaion that she was stealing treasure from the castle, tLudwig asked her to reveal what was hidden under her cloak. In that moment, her cloak fell open and a vision of roses could be seen, which was taken as a sign of God’s protection and approval of her work. Inscribed in the lower portion of the image. With a moulded oak frame. Excellent condition.
