This is a Japanese wooden bear carved naturalistically prowling on four legs with teeth bared, presented in a two tone finish grading from black on the legs and back to chocolate brown on the shoulders and head, dating from mid 20th century. This particular carving though highly accomplished is unsigned.

Though one of the smallest of the collection of 12 Japanese carved bears that we have acquired this bear is still of substantial size with abundant decorative appeal. All the bears have their own character, this one being unique for having a hunched back. There is some wear to the surface from handling such as around the nose, chin and higher relief areas on the legs. These bears are similar to those produced in Switzerland which are usually referred to as Black Forest carvings.

Condition: Excellent with some minor wear to the surface revealing the natural colour of the wood (probably cedar). This together with its lustrous waxed finish adds to the tactile nature of this carving.
