Huge French 19th Century Gilt Margin Glass Mirror
Magnificent and monumental French margin glass from the second half of the 19th Century.
Three putti in music making activity surmount the lavishly adorned upper section of the frame. Profusely decorated with foliage, garlands, nesting doves and marvellous scrollwork.
Eight margin panels with more foliage etched into the glass using white acid surround the main plate in excellent condition.
At the base, we find more superb scrollwork in the corners and another bird (eagle/ mythical?) at the centre base.
The frame retains its original backpanel and is extremely well constructed and very solid.
The reverse of the mirror bears a trade label for James A Butti, 7 Queen Street, Edinburgh.
James A. Butti, ‘Fine Art Collector and Dealer in Articles of Virtu’, operated from 7, Queen Street, Edinburgh in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Amongst his most import clients was General Augustus Pitt Rivers who founded the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford in 1884 If this item is not entirely suitable, please do not hesitate to contact us as we have a large store of un-restored items which can be started on if necessary.
