Exquisite Finest Quality Book Rest c.1860
About as good as they get, this exquisite book rest is simply the finest I have seen. The front is covered in Burr Thuya and inlaid with the pewter and brass with fine quality engraving. Even the shelf where the book sits is inlaid.
The back is covered in Amboyna, the most expensive timber in the world, and inlaid with brass stringing. The brass fittings are the finest quality, the pierced or reticulated page holders are sprung and controlled by the the shell shaped lever in the centre, once released the page holders spring back to hold the pages in place.
There is one small imperfection, a little piece of veneer raised, but best left rather than restore this fine piece with the original antique patina intact. I believe the piece to be Austrian in origin and dates to c.1860. The book shown measures 7 1/4" x 5" closed to give you an idea of scale. The front panel measures 11 1/4" x 8". Excellent original condition.
