English Oak Roof Boss Late 1400s
A rare example of an English Oak roof boss depicting an angel holding a heraldic device. The surface of the angel is in a exceptional dry untouched condition, with later polychrome applied to shield.Exaggerated carving to hair & hands, fine carved detail to feathered torso & wings The Armory that the angel holds depicts one of the "honourable ordinaries" a chevron, three torteaux ( roundels) sit above. The symbolic meaning of a chevron in heraldry can mean "protection" and is usually granted to those who have carried out work of a faithful service in the construction of churches or fortified buildings.
