E.Nesbit first edition, Treasure Seekers, Bastable
A pair of E. Nesbit First Editions.
The Story of the Treasure Seekers - Being the adventures of the Bastable children in search of a fortune. Sixteen illustrations and tissue protected frontispiece by Gordon Brown and Lewis Baumer . First Edition - published by T. Fisher Unwin 1899. A good tightly bound and complete copy with just a light damp stain on lower corner throughout. Inscribed in pen Julia Noel-Hill on front end paper. Boards and spine show signs of consistent usage with wear, marking and knocked corners but gold tooling is bright (see photos).
Oswald Bastable and others. Twenty one illustrations and frontispiece by Charles Brock and H. R. Millar. First Printing of First Edition - published by Wells Gardner, Darton & Co 1905. NB - the first printing was unique in that it that page 96 was incorrectly numbered 69. Binding is tight and book is complete other than the front end paper (probably taken out to remove one time owners name?). Unlike our copy of the Treasure Seekers, which has cut pages with gilt edging, this copy of Oswald Bastable was sold untrimmed. As is sometimes the case with books of this kind first owner made a bit of a hash separating a very few of the pages with his paper knife - the worst by far being p157/158 and p317/318. In truth, having checked again, there are just a couple of others and with lesser hamfistedness. All illustrated pages, which are in any case printed on lighter weight semi gloss paper are fine. General foxing, staining and mottling is fairly minimal but there is light brown rectangular staining to p218, p308/309 and the rear end paper is browned.
Further description and photos can be emailed if required.
