Sixteenth century style aumbry or side cabinet c.1930. Single door cupboard of useful size with beautifully carved Gothic tracery pierced front typical of the form. An aumbry (or ambry) was originally a term used for a recessed wall cupboard in a church in which were kept consecrated vestments and vessels. In medieval times it began to be used for domestic cupboards, typically with a ventilated front, in which valuable household objects, wine and food were kept.
A fine 20th.c. example in solid oak throughout with a single piece top and sides. Shaped sides and front, carved and molded detail and period style wrought iron handle and hinges. With a single shelf to the inside. Oak backboards and floor. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
