Antique Georgian Campaign Box by David Edwards writing slope david edwards campaign %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an exceptional mahogany and brass bound writing box, circa 1815 by David Edwards. David Edwards was a box maker who was awarded royal warrants from King George IV and later from Queen Victoria. The beautiful writing slope is veneered in Rosewood with brass edging around the box. The sides are fitted with campaign flush fitting brass handles.

When it is opened, it reveals a green leather skiver, 2 ink wells (one to hold the ink and the other to hold the sand) and a pen holder that can be removed to reveal a small void below it. To the right of the pen holder is David Edward's signature inlaid brass lid, with the floral knob.

Under the top part of the slope is both an internal tray that can be removed and a space for storage. On the back panel of the slope is a criss-crossed braided section for holding letters.

There are two secret drawers under the ink wells. The latch requires that the wood dividers and one back panel be removed to reveal a small opening under the lock, that when pressed down with a knife or thin object, then opens the secret compartment (see photo). To be honest, it took me and an expert in writing slopes several hours to find this latch.

The lock is a Bramah lock, which at the time was devised to be the first unpickable lock . The lock was first created in 1784, by J. Bramah, in Piccadilly London, still in business today. The lock is the first known high-security lock created. The key for the lock is included and works well.

The bottom part of the slope has a locking mechanism to hold the slope in place. Once released, it opens to reveal more storage and another braided section for letters, etc. The two tone wood creates a lovely effect. All of the slope, save for the pulls on the leather skiver is in superb condition.

This is a gorgeous piece for anyone.
