Antique Colonial Mandalay Box (c.1860)
This is a very rage antique Victorian colonial teak Mandalay box used in the British military in India, circa 1860.

This is a very rare Burmese Victorian travelling soldiers’ deed box known as a Mandalay box, circa 1860 originating from Colonial India. The box is profusely inset with brass strap work and brass inlay, it has the original steel carrying handles and original working lock and key. It opens to reveal many carved carved teak compartments for storage of precious items together with original mirror and letter rack. Some flowers given by a loved one are still enclosed within these compartments. It would have been used by a soldier attached to the British Raj, in India. The box is completely original and features a rich mahogany patination.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms especially the office, dining room or bedroom and is an ideal place to store make-up, documents or any other possessions. It has a beautiful deep rich patina which has been generated by the years of cleaning and care it has received.
