Ancient Roman glass ‘candlestick’ unguentarium
A Roman unguentarium in green glass, a type known as a ‘candlestick’ type because of its shape. The flask has a bell-shaped body, tall neck, with flattened rim and stands on a flat base indented towards the centre. The glass and crust exhibit attractive patches of iridescence.
Eastern Mediterranean: Circa 3rd century AD.

Complete and intact, with crusty accretions.
Height 20 cms (7.9 ins).
Provenance: Previously with a London gallery previously P.C. UK. Private collection.
(At the height of its popularity in Rome, glass was present in nearly every aspect of daily life. It was a particularly favoured container for precious, valuable liquids, such as expensive oils, perfumes, and medicines which were produced from all corners of the Roman Empire).
