Ancient Roman bronze fist and phallus amulet
A Roman bronze phallic amulets of fist and phallus type, with a manus fica (so-called obscene hand that was thought to represent female genitalia) to the left side and phallus to the right side. At the lower centre is a representation of phallus and testicles. Suspension loop at the top back surface unworked.
Circa 1st-3rd century AD.
Complete and intact with an overall dark green patination.
Width 7.6 cms (3 ins).
See Freud Museum London: Reference Number 3392 for similar example.
Provenance: Originally found in Turkey. From a private collection, North Wales, collected by the previous owner’s father from 1950's.
The phallic deity was called Fascinus, from the Latin word ‘fascinare’, meaning “to cast a spell”. According to Pliny the Elder, charms of this kind were worn even by babies and soldiers.
