A Year In Sweden. 1829 48 Hand Coloured Plates
Forssell, Christian Didrik.
Une Annee En Suede (A Year In Sweden. Hand Coloured Aquatint Costume Book).
Publisher (Unknown) Paris. 1829.
48 hand coloured aquatint engraved plates of Swedish regional costumes and some scenes of places including the mine at Fahlun and a traditional country house at Ornas. The plates still have the tissue guards, are very clean and fresh to view and touch. The printed paper covers dated 1836 are unusually pre-dated inside. The title page gives the date of 1829. There is a later half-morocco leather spine and corners, the boards all original and a limp thick card rather than a stiff hardback. This has left the boards with a few creases not seen but felt. Full quarto (4to). 1829. The book WAS published just as a series of engravings (see World cat). There are 20 Swedish regions/districts represented in the 47 full page plates + the rare engraved title page again hand-coloured. It does have a previous owners name to the top area "Joyce Bankes from her great-aunt Minnie 1918". The patterned endpaper seem to be all original. The plates as stated unusually clean and fresh. Ref: Colas 1282, Lipperheide 1054. One of the most attractive Swedish costume books ever printed. All on hand made cartridge paper. Very Good+
