A Victorian Mahogany Microscope Slide Cabinet
A Victorian mahogany microscope slide cabinet. Raised on small turned feet with a pair of doors, with flame mahogany panels, enclosing an interior of trays and a drawer all containing a variety of bottles, microscope slides, small gilt lacquered brass microscope and assorted other interesting objects. Bearing a label of the owners Charles and Harriet Elcock. In good and original condition. 590mm high, 610mm wide and 330mm deep. Circa 1870.
Charles Elcock was a professional microscope slide maker, operating from Belfast, Ireland between from the 1880's until the first decade of the 20th century. Elcock specialized in mounting foraminifera, producing slides that are both scientifically useful and aesthetically pleasing. He was curator of Belfast Art Gallery and Museum, and his wife Harriet Sophia (born Green) were both Quakers. W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries. Now under the stewardship of Mark and his wife, Louise, we take pride in maintaining the high standards which William set more than 50 years ago.
