A wonderful & highly unusual boarded box (bible box) cica 1620 featuring early ornamentation of inter linked and reversed arches with a central stylised palm leaf foliage within, this form of decoration is attributed to Salisbury ( West Country) , the interesting and unusual part is, this box has been carved on all four sides, quite a scarce thing for a regional box. The lid is fixed with its original pin hinges and the surface of the top of the box has a wonderful colour & patination with the medullary rays showing through, The construction of this box is dovetailed on all four sides with the base being nailed, going back to the decoration on this box, the carving is strong & deep which is repeated on all four sides with a channell moulded border also repeated around the box. The front features its original lockplate & harsp with a later date of 1717 which has been incised into the box.
