A 16th Century oak carving of St Michael in battle with a dragon . Arch Angel Michael the Great, leader of spiritual
forces of good against evil caught the minds and imagination of early christianity and commanded a place whithin the thoughts of the christian and medieval mind.He is represented in two roles as above he is in confict with a beast/dragon symbolising the power of good contending with satanic forces,and secondly of the Last Judgement he is seen holding the scales of justice in which souls are weighed. patronage includes military, mariners and merchants,to name just a few. Origin South Netherlandish. Date 16th Century medium Oak.
