Description

A 16th century oil on oak panel depicting a pentinent bishop kneeling and praying from the bible at the foot of the crucifixtion of christ, behind him is most likely Johannes, (saint john the apostle). The bible sits upon what is most likely a Prie-dieu with a red altar cloth draped across it, on the side of the cloth is an inscription which appears to be partly latin and french with the date 1543.
The painting is beautifully painted and is a fragment of the size of what it once was, the panel has unfortunately been cut down on two sides and comes fitted in a later gilt frame.
There are some minor losses to the paintwork and the picture is very dirty commensurate with age, overall its in good condition and a very interesting piece of religous art.
