Description

A 17th century English guild chest and constructed entirely from cedar. The chest has a shallow carved front which bares the coat of arms for the worshipful company of blacksmiths and is dated 1669, which puts it in the reign of Charles II, below the coat of arms is the moto "by Hammer of hand al arts do stand". Either side of the coat of arms is the tree of life, probably representing growth, death and rebirth, i.e the passing down of the skill of the blacksmith to the younger apprentice, and the craftsmanship and work being eternal through this cycle.
The chest has a few minor restorations commensurate with age, the surface has a superb colour and patination and the scent of the cedar is very pleasant when you open the lid.
