Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Georgian oak coffee table, featuring a central drawer, measuring 3ft 6” long and displaying a lovely rich colour, circa 1820, in excellent condition. The Georgian table has been adapted from a larger taller table, in order to serve at a coffee table height and size. The rectangular coffee table measures 3ft 6” wide by 1ft 6⅛” deep. The antique oak low table incorporates a triple-plank moulded oak top, above a straight elm frieze, which incorporates a single moulded working drawer. The drawer is constructed with oak drawer linings. The drawer features a lovely brass swan-neck handle, set against a decorative backplate. The oak coffee table is raised on four elm legs, featuring fine mouldings and decorative fretwork corbels to the underside of the table. The table has been constructed in the traditional manner, with mortice and tenon joints. It is solid in joint and ready to use.

This Georgian oak coffee table displays a rich oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour patination which can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

This Georgian oak coffee table, would look good in either a traditional or contemporary setting, for formal or everyday use, as a coffee table / centre table and radiates timeless character and charm. It would certainly grace any home or office and is a great investment as it is extremely functional.

History of the Coffee Table:
In Europe, the first tables specifically designed as and called coffee tables, appear to have been made in Britain during the late Victorian era. According to the listing in Victorian Furniture by R. W. Symonds & B. B. Whineray and also in The Country Life Book of English Furniture by Edward T. Joy, a table designed by E. W. Godwin in 1868 and made in large numbers by William Watt, and Collinson and Lock, is a coffee table.[4] If this is correct, it may be one of the earliest made in Europe. Other sources list it only as a "table", so this cannot be stated categorically. Far from being a low table, this table was about twenty-seven inches high.

Later coffee tables were designed as low tables, similar to ones used in tea houses. As the Anglo-Japanese style was popular in Britain throughout the 1870’s and 1880’s, and low tables were common in Japan, this seems to be a likely source for the concept of a long low table. Furthermore, with the increased number of coffee houses in England, demand for low “coffee” tables also increase. This led to English cabinetmakers designing sofas and couches to stand in front of a centre table in the living room, which further influenced the desire for coffee tables within British homes.

From the late 19th century onward, many coffee tables were subsequently made in earlier styles due to the popularity of revivalism, so it is quite possible to find Louis XVI-style coffee tables or Georgian-style coffee tables, but there seems to be no evidence of a table actually made as a coffee table before this time. Joseph Aronson in 1938 defined a coffee table as a "low wide table now used before a sofa or couch", adding "there is no historical precedent", perhaps suggesting they came late in the history of furniture. With the increasing availability of television sets from the 1950s onward, coffee tables came into their own, since they are low enough, even with cups and glasses on them, not to obstruct the view of the TV.
