Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Georgian linen press, constructed from top quality flame mahogany and decorated with boxwood inlay, circa 1780, in excellent condition. The top section supports a detachable protruding boxwood cross-banded and inlaid dentil architectural cornice, with a central reeded inlaid panel, flanked by a beautiful moulded swan-neck pediment, incorporating decorative boxwood cross-banding and fan motifs. Below are two exquisite flame mahogany doors, decorated with fine mahogany cross-banding and mouldings, incorporating further boxwood string inlay. The doors are also decorated with fan-shaped boxwood motifs. The left-hand door retains its original brass locking mechanism. The right-hand door features the original working lever lock (with working key). The two doors open up to reveal a storage area, fitted with five large removable oak linen trays. The linen trays are constructed with fine hand-dovetailed joints.
The Georgian linen press sits on a base of two-over-three graduated drawers which are constructed with hand-dovetail joints comprising solid oak drawer linings and bottoms. The drawer fronts are decorated with boxwood cross-banded frames, string inlay and quadrant fan motifs fitted with top-quality period solid brass knobs. The drawers retain the original key escutcheons, with working brass lever locks (including key). The mahogany laundry chest is raised on its original bracket feet and retains its original pine back-boards. It dismantles into two sections (top and base) allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom.
Also known as a wardrobe or armoire, this mahogany line press is very practical, but highly decorative, which would suit either a contemporary or traditional setting. This is a sought-after Georgian linen press due to its quality construction using fine quality flame mahogany timbers (at this time, England was importing top quality mahogany timbers from around the globe). This antique linen press is designed in the classic Georgian architecture, with simple, pronounced clean lines and a focus on symmetry. In the United States, the design was typical of Federal architecture and furniture. The Georgian storage cupboard has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Condition Report:
This is a fine quality antique English Georgian linen press, constructed from top quality flame mahogany and decorated with boxwood inlay, circa 1780, in excellent condition. There has been an old repair to the right-hand scroll pediment (the scroll pediment is solid in joint). Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the front and sides (see photos), but nothing significant considering its age. The Georgian linen press has been cleaned and French polished by hand in our workshop therefore, the colour and patination are of an excellent standard. All cross-banding and boxwood inlay is intact and in excellent condition. Both doors close and lock. There are no splits to the flame mahogany doors (which is common in linen presses). The doors lock using the original brass working lever lock (with working key). The drawer fronts incorporate top-quality later brass drawer knobs, with original brass lever locks (with working key). Nominal old use marks to the drawer bottoms. The Georgian linen press retains its original bracket feet and pine backboards. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
