Description

A very decorative oak draught screen from the Victorian period. The rear of the screen is carved throughout with fruiting foliage, with inset silk panels. Whilst the front has a much more medieval flavour with mythical figure and central coats of arms to the top crests and weaponry and flaming torches etc to the frame, which also has a number of cartouches with extracts in Latin. The inner panels are embossed and cut leather, decorated in gold, red and green. All in excellent condition and ready to look fantastic in the right setting. There are two Latin phrases on the screen "Plus Ultra" which translates to "Further Beyond" and "Sol Lucet Omnibus" meaning "The Sun Shines On Everyone" We originally thought the screen was English, however "Plus Ultra" was the personal motto of Charles V also known as Charles I of Spain. Spain was known for their expertise with carvings and tapestries and so could well be the country of origin for this piece.
