Artist Information.

Bernard Dufour was born Paris in 1922. Initially noted for his abstract painting after the Second World War, and latterly for portraits and human figures. Dufour
originally studied agricultural engineering and was forced into labour during the WWII occupation of France.
In the winter of 1944 to 1945, he studied at the University of Heidelberg . In the late fifties, he began to attract attention outside France and in 1959 participated in the second documenta exhibition in Kassel followed by the Venice Biennale in 1964. In 1961 he opened a studio in an old mill on the Aveyron River in Foissac, where he also lived. From the 1970s he has worked in photography as well as painting, and written several volumes of artistic notes and memoirs. Dufour's representational art often has erotic components. The models in his paintings are often in the company of the painter and this visible relationship with the model brings the viewer of his pictures into a voyeur position. Dufour now lives in Villeneuve and continues his work.
