Description

An absolutely incredible 17th Century Primitive Welsh Elm hanging spice mural cupboard of delightful small proportions. A beautifully honest piece with charming signs of age throughout. Without doubt the nicest mural cupboard we have seen. It is completely original throughout and in outstanding condition.
Highly rate to be constructed entirely from elm, this is a true indicator of its village carpenter origins. Featuring the most impressive cornice that we have ever seen on a food cupboard these are carved from a single piece of elm, an extremely difficult task that would have required the use of several different moulding planes all working hard against the tricky interlocking grain of the elm. The nature of this fantastic timber (a personal favourite of ours) is that it is prone to slight movement over time, in this case the door closes fine but is not flush at the bottom, a most charming feature. There are only a small number of historic worm holes to mention and we have treated this piece as a matter of professional practice to protect it for the future. Being made from elm this cupboard has the most incredible grain and depth of colour imaginable and has surface and patina beyond expectation.
