Description

A very good joined oak coffer with a super colour and deep natural patination.

With ked top rail and four original and finely carved front panels of stylised scrollwork. The muntins and stiles carved with interlaced ferns and punched decoration. The top with four fielded panels set in raised moulded and channel carved borders. Hinges and lock plate are later replacements.

Complete and original timbers throughout. Some old shrinkage and losses to top but not affecting structure. Minor dings and marks consistent with age and the coffer has a wonderful aged feel, great character and a wonderful colour.

The lid rises smoothly and closes properly. The coffer is very sturdy and robust with no weak joints or panels and is extremely heavy. All raised on tall stile feet and pegged throughout.

A lovely early and very solid coffer in fine original condition. English and dating from c. 1600.
