Description

A beautiful quality English George III figured walnut bureau of small proportions with a fabulous colour and retaining original brass handles and escutcheons in the Chippendale manner and retaining original locks to drawers and fall.

The drawers have original fully oak linings and the drawer fronts, fall and top of the bureau and deeply crossbanded with walnut and on each there is an extremely fine border of satinwood and walnut featherbanding - it rare to see such high quality work as this.

This interior is equally fine with a swept shape to the outer drawers, each with figured walnut fronts, inlaid with featherbanding and original fine oak linings. The central door highlighted with satinwood inlays and retaining original brass hinges and tiny lock.

Dings, marks, some losses and replacements. The hinges to the fall are later, bracket feet appear original but with later glue blocks to the reverse. A few areas with some old worm holes, long since dead and not significant.

The fall having a beautifully shaped recess for the skiver with re-entrant corners and lined in a bottle green material which is marked and has areas of wear but appears to be a late 19th Century replacement.

A superior bureau in very good condition for age, completely usable and very rare to find one with all original brasses and escutcheons - a lovely example.

Dimensions are:

41 inches high, 36 inches wide, 20 inches deep.

Floor to writing surface is 30 inches and maximum depth when the fall is down is 34 inches.
