Description

A particularly high quality mid-18th century Gainsborough chair in the Irish manner and of really superb colour and natural patination.

The arms with open flower head carved terminals and leafy scrolls over a deep and finely carved blind fretwork support of flowers and geometric motifs within a well shaped fielded reserve.

With elegant cabriole legs to front and back. The hips and feet of the front legs carved in the solid with oval lozenges bordered by leafy scrolls and drop bell husks and with lovely small flower heads carved to the spandrels.

The carving is confident, intricate and fine – executed with great skill and flourish. The detail, shaping and carving of these cabriole legs is seen on finest quality Dublin chairs of this period.

The chair has been recently upholstered in a heavyweight fabric, a silk mix with a lovely sheen, and with a cream design with exotic forest animals on a coral/amber ground.

Extremely comfortable, the seat is well padded wide and deep, the back supportive and well padded with a gently rake. The chair is very heavy, the frame is tight and strong with no movement.

Very few chairs of this quality come to the market and this is a rarely seen example with all the ‘bells and whistles’ and is in excellent original order throughout.

The chair stands really well and has lovely proportions. Strongly recommended.
