Description

A beautiful solid calamander and rosewood side table with satinwood stringing and turned crossed stretchers.

Acquired from a sale of contents of the decendents of the Drewe family at Castle Drogo.

This is a really attractive and useful small table. The lid rises on original brass hinges and the inner compartment is clean and solid.

Beautiful colour and natural finish.

Calamander is a highly desirable exotic timber which was exported from the Indias in great quantities in the 18th and early 19th centuries but became so rare that towards the end of the Victorian period it could no longer be purchased in any quantity.

The hazel and cream coloured timber is interspersed with dark stripes and is very striking. Teamed here with a beautifully grained rosewood top, the whole then inlaid with satinwood to accentuate the elegant lines.

Satinwood escutcheon and an early replacement lock.

Some small losses and marks consistent with age and use.

A very attractive, useful and usable small table in rarely seen solid calamander (coromandel) timber.

Dimensions are:

28 inches high, 17.5 inches wide and 14.5 inches deep.

With lid raised the height is 41.5 inches
