Description

A superior quality, large and beautiful walnut wall hung pier glass with original parcel gilt.

English c. 1735.

Retaining its original mirror plate within a leaf and fern carved slip.

The well shaped, hand carved pine frame is dressed with thickly cut walnut veneers which have developed a handsomely rich patina.

The scrolled swan neck pediment with a rocaille foliate and fern border is centred with a vase of palm leaves and flowers.

The sides with pierced trailing festoons of fruit and flowers over a shapely apron with gardrooned border interspersed with carved and gilded palms.

Minor losses to the gilding, just a few and tiny. Some degredation in small areas to the mirror plate but nothing unpleasant or affecting reflection and it would abnormal if the plate did not show its age in small ways. The plate is very thick hand made glass with a grey/gold hue typical of early mirror plate and giving a wonderfully atmospheric yet clear reflection.

Retaining original backboards.

The mirror is absolutely beautiful and is ready to hang.

These early 18th century English mirrors in original condition and of such fine quality are extremely rare. Most have been substantially restored or re-gilded or have later plates whereas this mirror appears completely original and untouched.
