Radiant George III Solid Elm Corner Cupboard c.1800

1 of 6
Description
A very beautiful elm corner cupboard made by skilled hands in c. 1800 and retaining all original timbers including original shaped shelves and hand hewn backboards.Fabulous well developed colour and patination to the elm, beautiful natural grain. The cabinet maker has chosen the wood with care and the fielded panels in upper and lower door both have wonderful matching swirls of rich burgundy and chocolate across the fronts – each thickly cut board with this patterned grain centralised and repeating. The upper fielded panel set within a carved peaked frame.
The interior has been painted in a lovely chalk blue. It was usual to paint the interiors of these cupboards for easy cleaning and hygiene. There are some old cup rings and some wear to the painted surface.
With stepped ogee original cornice and well sweetheart plinth. The cupboard is in a single piece with long oak backboards fixed with blacksmith forged nails.
There are some small nibbles to the flanking edges – as shown in our pictures – and an old spliced in repair to the lower right hand outer edge. The upper door retains its original escutcheon and old iron lock. The lower door has a very slight warp which does not affect function, will not move any further, and is not noticeable except on close inspection.
A really good example of a late Georgian corner cupboard, rare in solid elm, very usable and of impressive proportions. Offering a lot of robust storage space on original shaped and solid shelves.
This cupboard’s rich colour and deep patina will light up any room and will work equally well with modern or antique furnishings.
Dimensions are:
Height 81.75 inches (6ft 8 inches or 208 cms). Width 38.5 inches (98 cms). Depth 17 inches (43 cms).
