Oak and Walnut Crossbanded Chest of Drawers c.1840
Description
A large, substantial and very usable oak chest of drawers made by hand in c. 1840 and retaining its original well turned knob handle. The attractive deep frieze is crossbanded with walnut and inlaid with satinwood banding. The oversailing top has a lovely wide walnut crossbanding of a beautiful colour. There are two short over three long graduated drawers – all with clean and solid original linings and original iron locks. All of the drawers open and close smoothly and offer a considerable amount of storage space.
The oak is very fine quality cut on the top boards to show the medullary rays. There is no woodworm and the chest retains its original backboards and sits on tall bracket feet which appear to be original also.
The top comprises three oak boards cut from the same section of the tree, and these have been carefully matched to show off the medullary rays. The boards have a tiny amount of shrinkage giving a very fine gap of less than 1 mm. This would have occurred in the first few decades after the chest was made and the boards will not shrink further. Because of the bright lighting, the gaps appear more visible in our pictures and when with the chest itself this is hardly noticeable.
The whole chest with a really good, warm and consistent colour and developed natural patina. No worm or breaks or repairs and only minor dings and marks consistent with careful use. The chest is in very well cared for condition and is from a private home in Gloucestershire.
