Description

A fine quality, very large and stunningly beautiful mid 19th Century giltwood arched over-mantle mirror retaining its original plate and dating from c. 1850

The frame is gilded over pine and a significant amount of the detailed design is very finely carved by hand including the drop bell husk border surrounding the plate. The open flower heads intersperse expansive twisting leafy scrolls and the upper oval cartouche is framed by a wreath with sprigs of laurel. Lovely fluid embellishments to the whole perimeter and flanking the base and the mirror has very well balanced and substantial proportions. The whole is overlaid with gold which is original and untarnished.

Some small repairs and tiny losses consistent with age however the frame is extremely sturdy with no flaking or weakness. The mirror retains its original panelled back and the mirror plate is in very good condition with some very light degradation and small areas spotting here and there on the outermost border. The plate is very deep, it reflects extremely well and has a lovely soft hue to the glass.

This mirror is a superb example of monumental size and in fine original condition.
