Description

A rarely seen original Victorian letter box of excellent quality. Glass fronted, with brass slots in the top with ebony inlays and brass letters 'N' and 'S' and original working lock with key. Original brass hinges and polished mahogany lining with original divider at centre.

The brass label reads 'Letters for North and South Mail Before 5 PM'

It is likely to have been made for a stately home or for the front desk of a grand hotel.

In very good and original working condition with minor marks and wear and a few small shallow chips to the extremities consistent with age and use. There is also a tiny scratch (possibly intentional) which changes 5 pm to 3 pm on the brass top label - it may be possible to conceal or remove this small scratch but it is part of the history of the box and an honourable scar.

A charming and rarely seen genuine 19th Century example - beautiful grain and colour to the mahogany, original glass.
