Description

This is a very pretty and unusual piece of Arts and Crafts furniture. It is a purdonium or coal box. It is made in solid oak and is Edwardian, dating to around 1910. It is very unusual being a seat and a coal box. The cabinet has a lot of Arts and Crafts styling. It has pierced 'S' designs to the back and a carved panel to the fall. It has carrying handles and shaped feet and these terminate in fine castors. There is a lot of quality in this piece.

The door swings out to reveal a metal liner. This can be used to store coal (which was its original use) or perhaps magazines or even wine bottles!

The purdonium is in good condition. No damage or worm. The oak is well polished. Minor marks from usage.

This is a very unusual piece, Ideal for an Arts and Crafts home. It will look good at the side of a fireplace but could be used anywhere in a house furnished in Arts and Crafts or oak or amongst period furniture.

The coal box is 27 inches high and 16 inches wide and 13 inches deep.
