Description

A very Fine Regency period mahogany Sideboard of large size, with the finest mahogany tambour. The Sideboard has four drawers and stands on Rope twist tapering legs with
gilding throughout the piece. The handles are made of brass and depict
Lion heads with circular rings. This is the finest quality end grain I have seen in 45 years
in the trade. The piece was probably made for an extremely fine Georgian
House. When the tambour is closed they would have left the meat and
fish for the Master and his friends after a day’s shooting or fishing.
The closest example is in the Sheraton Encyclopaedia of 1804 and
an advert by Mallet’s Antiques in Berkeley Square London. This piece is probably by George Bullock
Bullock, George, Birmingham, Liverpool and London sculptor, cabinet maker and designer (fl.c.1801-18). George Bullock is thought to have been the son of James Bullock and his (presumed second) wife, Sibylla [Alec Berry, personal comm.]. His place of birth remains unknown. His age at the time of his death in 1818 was recorded as 35, suggesting that he was born 1782/83 but, while possible, this perhaps sits uneasily with the closely spaced baptism dates of two of his brothers and his sister. He had an older half-brother, James, from his father's first marriage, and three brothers, William (bap.1773), Joseph (bap. 1781), Charles (bap. 1783). A sister, Mary Ann, was born in 1784/5. Little is known of Bullock's early life, although the family appears to have spent time on the English south coast, at Plymouth and Portsea before his birth [DNB].
