George III Mahogany Pedestal Desk

Description

A superb George III 18th century 'plum pudding' mahogany partner's desk with an aged green leather top with broken gilt tooling and flanked by a two centimetre high thumbnail moulding that is raised to the sides of the top. To the front of the desk the arrangement of a centre drawer flanking three graduated pedestal drawers is repeated to the reverse of the desk and on the right hand side the desk is fitted with the same drawer arrangement. To the left hand side of the reverse the faux drawers (a door) opens to reveal an adjustable portfolio filing cabinet. The plinth base is unusually veneered and figured with plum pudding mahogany and the desk stands on concealed castors. The desk is in four sections all the drawers are cock-beaded and oak lined and retain the gilt brass handles. The overall scale is chic and the desk will allow two people to work comfortable at the same time if required. The height of the desk is low compared to later 19th century desks, which is why this desk is rather stylish.
