Description

A rare French Haviland Barbotine vase by artist Emile-Justin Merlot at the Auteuil Studio in Paris, c1876-1879. Made in faience (terra cotta) with a heavy glaze in mottled shades of brown and green, flower and leaf decoration in relief in muted whites, pinks, greens and yellows. Merlot's decoration blends Japanese and Impressionist styles to create a beautifully subtle, very decorative vase. With makers marks to the base, decorators mark to the side. Very small chip to the base, otherwise in immaculate condition.
